 Santa Anita golf club is a challenging
18-hole, 6368-yard, Par 71, Bermuda course located in Arcadia,
California. Opened in 1938, course construction began in 1933
as part of the Depression's WPA program and was designed by James
Harrison Smith. It became home of the Santa Anita Open. Held
each year until 1955, the Open became the official start of winter's
Tournament swing through Southern California.

- The golf course is adjacent
to the famous Santa Anita race track
 that shares the same name. During
the winter race season, you can hear the horse races being called
out while golfing. This scenic course is situated just below
the imposing San Gabriel Mountains. Since the natural surrounding
terrain is normally flat, man-made knolls were added to create
numerous uneven lies. Mature pine and oak trees line the fairways,
giving Santa Anita a country club feel. Although there aren't
any water hazards (with the exception of a flood control channel
that plays as out-of bounds, known as Stewart's Creek), there
are many strategically placed sand bunkers. Additionally, the
course's large greens are mostly elevated and generally slope
away from approach shots. One of the most difficult holes on
the course is the 18th; a 435-yard, par 4, that requires a left
to right tee shot over some very large mounds up a dogleg right
fairway, then a long approach shot to the clubhouse green.

 Ben Hogan used Santa Anita for
his practice rounds when playing the Southern California PGA
tour in the late 40's and early 50's. His favorite hole (photo
left) was the 204-yard par 3 12th hole that usually plays into
the wind and calls for a controlled draw to the well-bunkered
green. Playing golf at this course is playing a little of California
golf history. The Course Record established in the days of "The
Open" is 62 - held by Ellsworth Vines. Lloyd Mangrum won
the first and second Opens with 274 and 278. Par at that time
was 70.
