The Presidio Golf Course is
located in the heart of San Francisco just minutes
from downtown. Its beautiful, accessible, challenging and placed
on one of California's most historic pieces of land. Playing
the Presidio is the perfect way for a traveling golfer to experience
this great city. When in San Francico, one thinks of extravagant
hotels, pricey restruants, cable cars and nowhere to park. A
remarkable golf experience is the last thing on you expect to
find. But at the Presidio, the concept of inner city golf is
something else again. This course is tucked into the astonishing
bayside hills that frame one of the world's greatest cities.
It is just south of the fabled Golden Gate Bridge and in the
middle of a retired military reserve that was founded by the
Spanish in 1776. (history
below)
The
golf course was originally established as a private club in 1895
by a small group of civilians who shared play with the military.
A 100 years later, the Army base was closed by an act of Congress
and the course, now under the administration of the Presidio
Trust, the exclusive course was opened to the public. What the
public has discovered since then is a remarkable 6,500 yard,
par 72 course that winds its way through dense stands of century
old Monterey pines, eucalyptus, and coastal cypress trees.
It survived the great quake
of 1906 and has served as the home course
for some of America's top brass, including presidential leaders
like Teddy Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower. This tradition lasted
until 1995, when the Presidio was converted to a National Park,
making it accessible to the public. At that time Arnold Palmer
Golf was sought out to operate this hidden treasure by the bay
- allowing golfers of all abilities to play this wonderful facility.
Newly rejuvenated, the Presidio experience is nothing short of
spectacular.
Playing this enchanting course
will verify that fact that you are in a special
part of California. Steal a glance between shots and you'll see
brightly colored Victorians lining the trademark hills of San
Francisco. With drastic elevation changes, mature trees, strategically
placed bunkers and narrow fairways, the course provides unending
challenges for all levels of golfer. The course has been described
as a "walker's paradise," but the hills will make your
day a little tough when coupled with the bay areas fog and bitting
winds. What better golf environment. What better location. Rich
with history, beauty and challenge. Enjoy a special day of golf
in San Francisco. |
